Beryllium is hazardous: inhaling dust or fumes can cause acute lung inflammation and chronic beryllium disease (a granulomatous, immune‑mediated lung condition) and may increase lung cancer risk. Some people become sensitized and develop long‑term respiratory disability. Skin contact can cause irritation. Occupational exposure is the main concern; strict workplace controls, monitoring, and protective equipment reduce risk.

Beryllium is not a dietary nutrient and occurs only in trace amounts in some foods and drinking water. Detectable levels have been reported in leafy vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts, spices and certain seafoods; concentrations vary with local soil and water contamination. For most people, dietary intake is negligible compared with potential occupational or environmental exposure.

Beryllium is used in aerospace and defense for lightweight, stiff structural components and satellites and telescope mirrors; in nuclear reactors as a neutron reflector and moderator; in X-ray and electron windows; in electronics and connectors as beryllium-copper alloys for springs and contacts; and in precision instruments, medical imaging devices, and high-performance engines where stiffness, thermal stability, and conductivity are critical.

Beryllium is scarce because it’s produced mainly by cosmic‑ray spallation and was not abundant during planetary formation, and chemically it’s incompatible with common rock‑forming minerals. It concentrates only in rare environments—pegmatites and hydrothermal veins—as minerals like beryl and bertrandite, so economically viable deposits are uncommon. Its toxicity and complex refining also limit production and use.

Beryllium is a toxic metal; you should avoid handling it bare‑handed. Skin contact can cause irritation and spread particles, but the greatest danger is inhaling dust or fumes, which can cause sensitization and chronic lung disease. Use gloves, protective clothing and respiratory protection when working with beryllium, wash exposed skin immediately, and seek medical advice for breathing problems or persistent skin reactions.

Cigarettes can contain trace amounts of beryllium. It isn’t intentionally added, but tobacco plants can absorb beryllium and other heavy metals from contaminated soil, fertilizers, and processing; burning releases metal-laden particles into smoke. Concentrations are usually very low, yet inhaled beryllium contributes to respiratory toxicity and long-term health risks, including chronic lung disease and increased cancer risk.
