Anti Islet Cell Antibody

A positive islet cell antibody test means the immune system is attacking the pancreas’ insulin-producing islet cells. It indicates an autoimmune process often preceding or accompanying type 1 diabetes (including LADA). It raises the likelihood of progressive beta-cell loss and future insulin deficiency. The result supports—but does not alone confirm—autoimmune diabetes and typically leads to closer monitoring and specialist assessment.

Islet-cell antibody testing costs vary widely. In India private labs typically charge about INR 800–3,000 (~$10–40). In the US individual autoantibody assays are commonly $50–$300 each, with panels higher; insurance may cover testing. In the UK testing is usually arranged and funded by the NHS when indicated; private tests can run roughly £50–£150. Prices depend on the lab and assays used.

A positive GAD antibody result means the immune system has produced antibodies against glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD), an enzyme in pancreatic beta cells and some neurons. It commonly indicates autoimmune activity linked to type 1 diabetes or latent autoimmune diabetes in adults and may be seen in certain neurological conditions. It supports, but does not alone confirm, diagnosis; clinical assessment and additional tests are needed.

A positive IA‑2 antibody test indicates an autoimmune response against pancreatic beta cells. It’s commonly seen in type 1 diabetes and predicts higher risk of progressive beta‑cell loss and eventual insulin dependence. Interpreted alongside other autoantibodies and clinical findings, a positive result supports an autoimmune diagnosis and prompts closer monitoring and early specialist care, often including insulin planning.

A positive antibody test means your immune system has produced antibodies to the virus, suggesting past infection or vaccination. It does not prove you are currently infectious and doesn’t guarantee complete or long-lasting immunity. Timing (IgM vs IgG) affects interpretation, and false positives can occur. If symptomatic or needing confirmation, discuss results with your healthcare provider — they may recommend PCR testing or repeat serology.

Autoantibodies associated with type 1 diabetes (e.g., GAD65, IA‑2, insulin, ZnT8) usually persist for years or life, though their levels often fall over time. In some people—especially adults with latent autoimmune diabetes—antibody titers can decline or become undetectable, but loss of antibodies doesn’t necessarily reverse autoimmune damage. Transient antibodies after infections or immunotherapy are possible but sustained disappearance is uncommon.
