Adenovirus PCR Test

A PCR test for adenovirus detects adenoviral DNA in clinical samples (nasal/throat swabs, conjunctival swabs, stool, blood) by amplifying viral genetic material. It is highly sensitive and specific, can confirm infection and, in some assays, determine serotype. Results help diagnose respiratory, ocular, gastrointestinal, or disseminated adenovirus infections and guide patient management and infection-control decisions; turnaround varies from hours to days.

If your PCR test is positive, isolate immediately and limit contact with others. Notify close contacts and follow local public-health isolation guidance. Monitor symptoms, rest, stay hydrated, and use over-the-counter remedies as needed. Seek medical advice if you’re high risk or develop warning signs (difficulty breathing, chest pain, confusion, persistent fever). Ask your clinician about treatments or further testing.

Adenovirus PCR is reported as negative/undetectable or as a quantitative viral load. Approximate categories: undetectable; low (~<10^3 copies/mL); moderate (~10^3–10^5 copies/mL); and high (~>10^6 copies/mL). Cutoffs vary by laboratory and assay. Higher loads—especially >10^5–10^6 copies/mL—are more likely to reflect active or severe infection, particularly in immunocompromised patients.

The best test for adenovirus is PCR (molecular testing) on an appropriate specimen — nasopharyngeal swab for respiratory illness, stool for gastrointestinal disease, or conjunctival swab for eye infection. PCR is highly sensitive and specific; rapid antigen tests are less reliable, while viral culture is slower and serology is mainly for retrospective or epidemiologic purposes.

Adenovirus usually causes mild, self-limiting respiratory, eye, or gastrointestinal infections, especially in children. However it can be serious in infants, older adults, and people with weakened immunity, sometimes causing pneumonia, hepatitis, or encephalitis and requiring hospitalization. Outbreaks occur in close settings. Most healthy individuals recover with supportive care; severe cases need medical treatment and, in specific populations, vaccination is available.

PCR test positivity varies by virus and person. For many respiratory viruses, including SARS‑CoV‑2, PCR is often positive for about 1–3 weeks after symptoms begin; viral RNA can persist and be detectable for several weeks to months in some cases. A positive PCR does not always mean infectious virus—high cycle thresholds or culture‑negative results suggest nonviable fragments. Immunocompromised people can remain PCR‑positive longer.
