This timing provides clearer facial detail—enough fetal fat yet still room to move. Earlier scans (about 4–5 months) may assess anatomy, but 6½–8 months usually yields the best 3D/4D images.

A 3D/4D ultrasound price varies by country and clinic. In the US expect roughly $60–$300 per session, in the UK about £40–£150, and in India around ₹1,000–₹5,000. Costs depend on location, clinic reputation, session length, image/print packages and whether it’s diagnostic or keepsake. Elective keepsake scans are often not covered by insurance; medical scans usually are.

Most clinics recommend staying well hydrated before a transabdominal 3D fetal ultrasound. Drinking extra water in the 24 hours before and 1–2 cups (250–500 ml) about 30–60 minutes before the scan can increase amniotic fluid and improve image quality; early pregnancy scans may also require a full bladder.
