3D CT Scan Hip Joint

A 3D CT scan for hip replacement uses CT images reconstructed into a three-dimensional model of the pelvis and femur. It accurately shows bone shape, deformities, bone stock, leg-length and rotation. Surgeons use it for preoperative planning, implant sizing, positioning, templating and custom guides or navigation to optimize alignment and reduce risks of dislocation, leg-length discrepancy and loosening.

A CT scan of the hip provides detailed cross-sectional images of bone and joint anatomy. It detects fractures, dislocations, bone lesions or tumors, degenerative arthritis, bone infection, loose bodies, heterotopic ossification and evaluates surgical hardware. With contrast it can show soft-tissue masses, fluid collections or abscesses and vascular anatomy, though MRI is better for cartilage, labrum and soft-tissue detail.

A 3D CT scan reconstructs multiple cross-sectional X‑ray images into a three‑dimensional view, showing bones, organs, blood vessels and soft tissues in detail. It reveals fractures, tumors, infections, bleeding, vascular blockages, and congenital anomalies, defines the size, shape and exact location of lesions, and helps plan surgery or interventions. Contrast enhancement improves visualization of blood flow and tissue differences.

A 3D CT scan appointment usually lasts 10–30 minutes. The scan itself often takes seconds to a few minutes, while patient positioning, contrast injection (if used), and prep add time. Generating 3D reconstructions typically requires a few additional minutes for computer processing; complex studies or reporting may extend total time-to-results to hours. Most patients are in the department under 30 minutes.

A 3D CT scan exposes you to ionizing radiation, slightly raising lifetime cancer risk. If contrast dye is used, effects may include allergic reactions (rash, itching, rarely anaphylaxis), metallic taste, nausea, or kidney stress—especially with pre‑existing renal impairment. Some people experience claustrophobia or discomfort from lying still; contrast injection can also cause local pain, swelling, or extravasation.

2D CT produces axial and reformatted coronal or sagittal cross-sectional slice images that show internal anatomy in thin planes. 3D CT reconstructs those slices into volumetric, rotatable models (surface or volume rendering) to reveal spatial relationships and external contours. 3D aids surgical planning, fracture assessment, and implant sizing but needs extra processing and can obscure fine internal detail seen on 2D slices.
