Normal 24‑hour urine microalbumin excretion is less than 30 mg per 24 hours. Microalbuminuria is 30–300 mg/24 h (early kidney damage), and values >300 mg/24 h indicate overt (macro)albuminuria. Lab methods and hydration can affect results; repeat testing or an albumin-to-creatinine ratio may be used for confirmation. Consult your healthcare provider for interpretation.

High urine microalbumin (microalbuminuria) means small amounts of the blood protein albumin are leaking into urine — an early sign of kidney damage, often from diabetes or high blood pressure. It also signals higher cardiovascular risk. Doctors usually repeat testing, evaluate blood sugar and blood pressure, and may prescribe ACE inhibitors/ARBs plus lifestyle changes to slow progression and protect kidney function. Follow-up care is important.

You’re given a large, labeled container and instructed to discard the first morning urine and note the time. Collect every urine sample for the next 24 hours into the container, including the first morning void at the end of the period. Keep the collection refrigerated or on ice, avoid missing any samples, record start/end times, and return the specimen to the lab promptly.

A good (normal) urine albumin level is minimal: urine albumin-to-creatinine ratio (ACR) under 30 mg/g (<3 mg/mmol). A 24-hour albumin excretion below 30 mg/day is also normal. ACR 30–300 mg/g (3–30 mg/mmol) indicates microalbuminuria; >300 mg/g (>30 mg/mmol) indicates macroalbuminuria. Persistent elevation requires medical assessment, especially with diabetes or high blood pressure.

To reduce urine microalbumin: tightly control blood sugar and blood pressure (often with ACE inhibitors/ARBs if prescribed), lower salt intake, lose weight, exercise regularly, quit smoking, and manage cholesterol. Avoid nephrotoxic drugs (e.g., NSAIDs) and stay hydrated. Regular monitoring of urine albumin and kidney function and working with your clinician to optimize medications and lifestyle are essential.

Persistent proteinuria above 150 mg/24h is abnormal; 150–300 mg/24h represents mild elevation, while values >300 mg/24h are generally considered significant.
